About the museum
The museum is housed in the 17th-century rural house known as the “Busa”, in the hamlet of Cella in Forni di Sopra. The building, once a dwelling for people and animals where agricultural work went hand in hand with ironworking and textile crafts, has recently been restored. With its opening to the public it took the name “Ciasa dai Fornés”, and on the ground floor it hosts the exhibition “Il filo dei ricordi”.
Until the First World War, the economic and social life of Carnia was based mainly on two activities, farming and weaving, which alternated over the course of the year. In winter the cramârs (travelling pedlars) and weavers migrated to the lands of the Serenissima (the Republic of Venice) and of the Habsburgs, while at home the raw materials obtained from the fields and nature were worked: sheep’s wool, hemp and linen, and yellow, green and red dyes extracted from plants.
The museum displays garments, working tools, blankets with typical patterns, coloured fabrics and furniture, together with needlework and crochet linked to women’s dowries. One part is devoted to the family production of scarpéts, the typical Carnic footwear made of velvet entirely by hand, from the quilted soles to the upper and the embroidery.
