About the museum
The Museo Laus Pompeia is located in Lodi Vecchio, in Piazza Santa Maria, where the forum of the Roman city of Laus Pompeia once stood and where, from the end of the 4th century, the cathedral of Santa Maria was built; it was demolished at the end of the 19th century. Today this area is the cultural centre of the town, with the museum, the library and the archaeological park.
The museum is housed in an 18th-century building in the Corte Bassa rural complex, long used as a stable and hayloft and restored between 2010 and 2014. The town museum occupies the first floor; the floors below house the library, which holds the collection of the Milanese archaeologist Antonio Frova (1914–2007), who carried out the first scientific research at Lodi Vecchio.
In the adjoining archaeological area, imposing foundations of pillars and walls can be seen, belonging to a large public Roman building on the forum and to the medieval basilica with three naves. In the former 17th-century Conventino in the same complex, medieval remains of the lost basilica are displayed, and educational activities and temporary exhibitions take place.
