About the museum
The museum, formerly the Museo diocesano, arose from an agreement between Bishop Roberto Massimiliani and the heritage authority (Soprintendenza alle Gallerie del Lazio), begun in the 1950s, following a project pursued since the beginning of the century by a group of citizens led by Giocondo Pasquinangeli, honorary inspector of Fine Arts. The museum opened in 1967 in the former church of San Silvestro as the first diocesan museum in Lazio.
The collection was enlarged in the 1970s with works from nearby centres. In 2004 the restoration of the many canvases kept in the Palazzo Vescovile began, which made it possible to open a detached section in the same palace and double the exhibition offer.
The works are divided between the two venues in chronological order: at San Silvestro, mainly works from the 8th to the 16th century are displayed, including mosaics, gold-ground panels, stone and wooden sculptures, goldsmiths' work and liturgical vestments; the Palazzo Vescovile houses mainly canvases from the 16th to 20th centuries, vestments and early medieval stone material. The artists range from Vannuccio di Viva and Taddeo di Bartolo to Piermatteo d’Amelia, Cesare Nebbia and Filippo Lauri.
