About the museum
The museum grew out of the activity of the Fermodellisti Alto Vicentino, a group founded by seven enthusiasts whose statute was signed on 1 September 1988 with the support of the Municipality of Schio. The municipal administration gave the association a disused room at the retirement home in Via Baratto and contributed initial funding for purchasing materials.
Construction of the large club layout began on 1 November 1989, and after just nine months the main circuit was complete, allowing the first trains to run. For about ten years the layout was extended and refined by specialist working groups. From the start, the layout has opened to the public at Christmas, Easter and on 29 June, the feast day of the patron saint.
The layout takes up about 100 m² of the 150 m² premises. It is built in H0 scale, with a 400-metre main circuit with a false double track, four stations (Vicenza, Cittadella, Chiusaforte and Schio) and an automatic block system with 42 sections, designed and built by the members themselves. The landscape plays a central role: the return curves are hidden in tunnels, and the tracks are designed to create an impression of realism. The museum also has a collection of more than a thousand model trains, both commercial and handmade, showing the evolution of model railways from 1950 to 2000.
