Temporary location. The historic seat in the former Augustinian convent has been unsafe since the 2012 earthquake; the collections are curated by the Fondazione Un Paese at the Centro Culturale Zavattini.

About the museum

The Museo nazionale delle arti naïves was established in Luzzara in 1968, after the first edition of the Premio dei Naïfs, opened on 31 December 1967, at the wish of Cesare Zavattini, who promoted naïf art as a movement. For decades it collected paintings, drawings, prints and documents by Italian and foreign naïf painters, also thanks to donations such as those of Ugo Astarita, Enrico Fereoli, Alceo Poltronieri and Pietro Ghizzardi.

The original seat was the 15th-century former Augustinian convent in Via Villa Superiore, which was made unsafe by the 2012 earthquake. Today the museum's works form part of the collections managed by the Fondazione Un Paese, established at the wish of the Comune di Luzzara; together with the Fondo Cesare Zavattini and the photography collections, they animate the activities of the Centro Culturale Zavattini.

The core of the naïf collection counts more than 500 painted, sculpted and graphic works by artists such as Pietro Ghizzardi, Bruno Rovesti, Ugo Astarita, Gino Covili and Lorenzo Lovo. The Centro Culturale, opened in 2015 in the building that also houses the municipal library, hosts exhibitions, series of events and educational activities.
