About the museum
Omu Axiu, known in dialect as “casa Vargiu”, is a large residence of more than 1,200 square metres that has belonged to the Vargiu family since the 16th century. For centuries it was the farmstead at the centre of village life; today the family has turned it into an ethnographic and embroidery museum, a restaurant and an albergo diffuso (dispersed hotel) in the historic centre of Orroli, in the Sarcidano area.
The museum rooms show how people lived more than a hundred years ago in farming communities: the preparation and storage of bread and food, the tools and household items left in place, field work and cooking. A room once used for grinding grain now houses the restaurant, and the portico of the old courtyard is where meals are served in the warm season.
On the upper floor one of the most precious expressions of Sardinian culture is preserved: embroidery. In the bedrooms, clothing, accessories and family objects are on display, together with a rich household trousseau. The property was one of the first albergo diffusi in Italy.
