About the museum

The museum was founded in 1971 as a museum-picture gallery in two rooms on the ground floor of the town hall, on the initiative of Prof. Vincenzo Brocco. In 1979 the archpriest Don Marcello Bernacchia entrusted Brocco with setting up the parish museum of Santa Maria di Piazza, arranged in six themed rooms. It opened on 18 March 1979 under Bishop Cleto Bellucci, but difficulties of access soon forced its closure.

In 2016 the municipality of Mogliano, owner of the building, restored the rooms, bringing them into line with safety and accessibility rules, and re-set the museum, which reopened on 24 June, the feast of the patron saint, St John the Baptist. The rooms lie beside the church of Santa Maria di Piazza, on the upper floor above the sacristy, in the premises of the former oratory of the Madonna della Misericordia.

The works come from the churches and confraternities of the area and are now grouped in four rooms according to their church of origin, so that visitors can trace the history of each place of worship. The last room has a window onto the square, the historic centre and the hills, with the old municipal coat of arms and the inscription “Laus Deo 1507”, adopted as the museum's emblem.
