About the museum
The palazzo was built at the end of the 16th century by Minuccio Minucci (1551–1604), a diplomat of the Holy See, in charge of the Vatican Secretariat of State for Germany and archbishop of Zadar. The large, imposing building was meant to display the family’s magnificence in the context of Serravalle. After more than three centuries it passed to the Gera family of Conegliano, and in 1849 it was sold to Giuseppe De Carlo.
Giacomo Camillo De Carlo (1892–1968) lived here: a cavalry officer, pilot, hero of the First World War, secret agent, podestà (appointed mayor) of Vittorio Veneto and diplomat. On his travels, particularly in North Africa and the Far East, he assembled an eclectic collection of works of art, antique furniture, Oriental carpets, tapestries, ceramics, Murano glass, silverware and everyday objects, arranged in a theatrical way.
By his will, De Carlo wanted the house to remain intact and open to the public. The Foundation he established, named after Minuccio Minucci, now runs the museum, with sitting rooms, dining room, salon, kitchen, library and bedrooms furnished as they once were.
