About the museum
The Museo Ruggiero Leoncavallo is located in Montalto Uffugo, in the 15th-century Dominican complex of ancient Aufugum, and is the only museum in Italy entirely devoted to the composer. Leoncavallo lived in Montalto Uffugo between 1860 and 1868; as a child he witnessed here, on 5 March 1865, a tragic episode that many years later inspired his best-known opera, Pagliacci.
The museum, opened to the public in 2010, gathers testimonies and objects linked to the musician: scores of many of his compositions, books from his library and personal items such as the inkwell and the conductor’s baton. They recall his most celebrated works, including Pagliacci, Mattinata, Zazà and I Medici, and the composer’s relations with the royal houses.
A large part of the display is devoted to music media, from the wooden cylinders and phonograph rolls of the mid-19th century to piano rolls and every type of record, up to vinyl and DVD. The route also includes references to the history and customs of the area, including the Arbëreshë community.
