About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Aversa was established in 1995 inside the cathedral of San Paolo and holds the artistic and liturgical heritage of the cathedral.
The route is divided into two parts: a section in the ambulatory of the cathedral, with architectural, sculptural and liturgical finds, and a second section in the Loreto side chapel and the Tesoro Vecchio (Old Treasury).
Among the works preserved are sacred silverware from the 17th and 18th centuries by important Neapolitan workshops, documents from the Norman period, the Madonna with the Gonfalon, a canvas signed and dated by Francesco Solimena, and several panels from the second half of the 15th century by Angiolillo Arcuccio, including the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. Of particular importance is also the marble slab of the 11th century with Saint George and the dragon, one of the few pre-Romanesque sculptures in southern Italy.
