About the museum
Palazzo Fogazzaro was built in 1810 to a design by the architect Carlo Barrera from Lugano, who also worked on the Duomo di San Pietro in Schio. The building, Palladian in layout with a portico and a loggia one above the other, faces via Pasini and stands on the site of a workshop for carding cloth belonging to the Fogazzaro family, who had been active in the wool trade since the early 18th century. Over time it served as a residence, a store for wool and grain, and a seat of public offices and schools.
The Comune di Schio bought it in 1948 and turned it into a cultural space after numerous restoration works. Since 2021 the palace has housed the civic museum, which is part of the network of the Musei AltoVicentino.
The museum holds the Collezione Civica, built up through successive donations: paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures from the 13th century to the present day, with a section devoted to artists’ books. The route also includes two oval allegorical paintings by the French painter Louis Dorigny, the Cibin Gori archaeological collection, with more than 4,000 finds coming mainly from the Bocca Lorenza cave and sites in the Altovicentino area, and the Strolin numismatic collection, of almost 3,500 coins and medals. The displays are renewed periodically, and the palace also hosts exhibitions, meetings and lectures.
