About the museum
The Museo speleo paleontologico e archeologico is located in the hamlet of San Vittore Terme, in the municipality of Genga, in the area of the Frasassi Caves. It opened in 2006 to house a fossil ichthyosaur found in 1976 at Camponocecchio, during works on the Gattuccio tunnel along state road 76.
On the ground floor the palaeontological section presents the fossil, nicknamed “Marta”, along with other finds from the Frasassi Gorge, rocks and sediments. A teaching room devoted to speleology displays models of the local karst, caving equipment and information on underground flora and fauna.
The first floor houses the archaeological section, with finds ranging from prehistory to the period just before Romanisation, in the 3rd century BC. Among the materials, the Final Bronze Age cinerary urns from the necropolis of Pianello di Genga stand out. The museum is part of the visit offer of Frasassi Experiences, together with the caves and the Museo Arte Storia Territorio.
