About the museum
The museum, presented as the first of its kind in Italy, is devoted to contemporary sacred art, with the crucifix and the Passion as its constant theme. It is located in the Sanctuary of San Gabriele dell’Addolorata, in Isola del Gran Sasso d’Italia.
The international association Staurós was founded in 1973 as a point of reference for exploring the relationship between the Christian world and contemporary forms of expression. The project took concrete shape in 1984 during the Biennale d’Arte Sacra in Pescara, which aimed to bridge the gap between the wisdom of the cross and contemporary culture, with an open approach to today’s art.
Many artists have donated works that are on permanent display, while others have presented their work for limited periods. Names mentioned include Ugo Attardi, Remo Brindisi, Pietro Cascella, Omar Galliani, Umberto Mastroianni, Achille Pace, Concetto Pozzati, Ernesto Treccani and Alberto Sughi.
