About the museum
The museum is housed in the building bought at the end of the 19th century by the Associazione Generale degli Operai di Pinerolo, the mutual aid society which, according to tradition, was founded on 12 October 1848 by a group of craftsmen meeting in a town inn, and is regarded as the first of its kind in Italy.
The rooms retain the look of what was once the society’s headquarters and tell the story of the society through the symbol of the handshake, mutualist iconography, furnishings, registers and the banners of the associations. Each room is dedicated to a theme: from the Segreteria (secretariat) to the Reciprocanza (reciprocity), from festivities to education, from the Sala del Consiglio (Council Room) to the banners, as well as the spaces on mutualism without borders and on the role of women.
The route shows how workers supported one another in cases of illness, unemployment and old age, and how the societies contributed to the birth of popular education and a culture of labor. The museum is run by the same workers’ society, which continues to promote educational and cultural initiatives.
