About the museum
The museum in Montenero d'Orcia, a hamlet of Castel del Piano, is part of the Monte Amiata museum network and is dedicated to the culture of the vine and wine in the area. It is set up in a single room of about 150 square metres divided by wooden panels; the partitions are built like wine presses and allow the content of the display to be arranged.
The panels, which are concise and accompanied by meaningful images, deal with the vine and the land, the vine and people, land reform, wine past and present, grape varieties and wine quality. Another part of the room is devoted to chestnuts and extra virgin olive oil, two of the most important typical products of the Amiata area.
Alongside the panels are traditional tools for growing vines and producing wine. The most interesting piece is the “pigiauva”, an oak wine press dating from the 18th century, found in the countryside around Petricci (municipality of Semproniano) and complete with its hull, levers and original grates, used for pressing until 1910.
