About the museum
The museum in Timau, a hamlet of Paluzza, is dedicated to the role of Carnia in the First World War (1915–1918) and honours the Carnic porters, the women who supplied the soldiers on the front line. It was founded in 1988 on the initiative of Lindo Unfer; the renovation work was completed in 2013, when it took on its present form. It is run by the Associazione Amici delle Alpi Carniche together with the Comune di Paluzza.
The indoor section spans eight rooms. It displays finds recovered from the surrounding peaks, documents and photographs from the three years of war, equipment, weapons and ammunition, objects from trench life such as stoves and a barrel for alcohol, and a military medicine section with surgical instruments, prostheses, stretchers and medicines. Two rooms are dedicated to the Carnic porters.
The museum is the ideal starting point for visiting the outdoor sites on Pal Piccolo, Freikofel and other peaks near the Passo di Monte Croce Carnico, where trenches and gun positions can still be seen.
