About the museum
La Mozartina is a house in the centre of Paularo, in Carnia, which holds a collection of musical instruments and documents linked to the musical and cultural life of the Incaroio valley. The building was rebuilt after a fire in 1709, has a 16th-century layout and retains architectural features such as the central twin window (bifora) and a portal in Louis XIII style.
The museum was founded on the initiative of the composer and patron Giovanni Canciani (1936–2018), a leading figure in Carnian culture, who brought together in the building one of the largest regional collections of historical and modern instruments. The house is managed by the association Gli Amici della Mozartina, which is committed to the conservation, promotion and dissemination of musical and humanistic culture.
The instruments are spread over three floors and, according to the museum, are restored and in working order; they trace the history of the organ, the harpsichord and the piano. The house is completed by a library, paintings, furniture and art objects in a setting of late 18th- and 19th-century taste, as well as an archive of scores and musical manuscripts. La Mozartina is also one of the sections of the Ecomuseo Mistirs di Paularo.
