About the museum
The museum is located in the Centro spaziale “Piero Fanti” at Fucino, the large Telespazio station active since 1963 on the Fucino plain. It was conceived and built from 1968 onward to document Telespazio's role in satellite telecommunications, from the first experiments of the early 1960s.
Among the exhibits are the mobile stations and the 9-metre-diameter antenna with which the first transmissions between the United States and Italy were made via the Relay satellite in 1962, and, from 1963, the experiments with the Telstar satellite. In 1968 the same antenna was taken to Uganda for the visit of Pope Paul VI and provided the first worldwide live satellite link from the African continent.
The stern of the ship Elettra is also preserved at the centre; Guglielmo Marconi conducted shortwave radio propagation experiments on board between the wars. It was donated to Telespazio by the Ministero delle Poste e delle Telecomunicazioni in 1978. The museum is also used for school visits.
