About the museum
The museum of sacred art in Fivizzano, known as the Museo di San Giovanni, was inaugurated in 1998 in a building rebuilt on the site of the former church of San Giovanni, destroyed by the earthquake of 1920. The church had been founded in 1335 by Puccio di Duccio della Verrucola Bosi, grandfather of Andreola Bosi, mother of Pope Nicholas V, and was linked to the nearby Augustinian convent, founded in 1391.
The collections comprise two main nuclei. The first comes from the former church and the Augustinian convent; the second from sacred buildings in Fivizzano’s outlying villages, moved to the museum for reasons of conservation and protection. A famous Florentine Renaissance cope of 1450, made for the canonisation of Saint Bernardino of Siena and originally from this church, was sold after the earthquake and has been at the Museo del Bargello since 1937.
Among the works on display are a painting of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino by Zanobi Machiavelli, the marble funerary monument of the Augustinian Leonardo Valazzana, linked to the circle of Jacopo Sansovino, silver chalices, illuminated fourteenth-century antiphonaries, Renaissance wooden busts, Baroque candlesticks and an Annunciation by Stefano Lemmi.
