About the museum

The Museo Uomo-Ambiente grew out of research by teachers and pupils at the Scuola Elementare di Bazzano and the commitment of volunteers, who wanted to bring back trades that had disappeared. From this, the Gruppo Culturale “Il Camino” developed the project of an interactive and virtual museum, opened on 14 December 2003 with the support of the Cantini family. Today it is a non-state museum accredited to the Sistema Museale Regionale dell’Emilia-Romagna and part of the network “I Musei del Mondo Rurale”.

The museum is at Via Borgo in Bazzano, in the municipality of Neviano degli Arduini. It does not want to be a simple museum of peasant life: the objects are presented in their context, together with the land and the landscape, and an archive database gathers the objects found in the area in order to organise periodic themed routes.

The current displays develop two routes, “dalla canapa al tessuto” (from hemp to cloth) and “dalla vite al vino” (from vine to wine), which engage visitors both in cultivation and processing techniques and on a sensory level: the setting recalls a lived-in home, with a fire burning and tools ready to use. In the entrance hall a touch-screen multimedia station allows visitors to tour all the rooms virtually and listen to oral testimonies.
