About the museum

The castle was probably founded around the middle of the 10th century by Adalberto Atto. Little of the original structure survives: the imposing ruins on the crag date mostly from the late Middle Ages and later, owing to decay, the collapse of the slope, at least two sieges and later alterations. With Adalberto Atto began the policy of acquisitions that led his great-granddaughter Matilde to rule a territory stretching from the Veronese area to upper Lazio.

Canossa is famous above all for the reconciliation of 1077 between Emperor Enrico IV and Pope Gregorio VII, in which Matilde played a leading role and from which the expression “andare a Canossa” (“to go to Canossa”) derives. In 1878 the state acquired the fortress, which was declared a national monument.

Naborre Campanini promoted archaeological excavations in those years: the finds were placed in a small adjoining museum, opened in 1913 and later named after him. Since December 2014 the Ministry of Culture has managed the complex through the Polo museale, later the Direzione regionale Musei dell’Emilia-Romagna; day-to-day management, promotion and restoration are entrusted to the Associazione di Volontariato Culturale Matilde di Canossa.
