About the museum
The Casa del Tibet was founded in 1990 in Votigno, a small medieval village in the hills of Canossa, under the patronage of the Dalai Lama. It is a non-profit cultural centre, created to protect Tibetan culture and support Tibetan refugees in India.
Alongside the centre’s activities there is a museum, listed in the regional catalogue of Emilia-Romagna museums as a thematic museum of ethnology and ethnography, opened in 1999. The collections consist mainly of photographs, documentary material and objects relating to Tibetan life and religion; the holdings include photographs taken in Tibet by Fosco Maraini in 1937 and 1948.
The village of Votigno, about two kilometres from the rock of Canossa, is visited on foot.
