About the museum
La Terrazza delle Stelle is an astronomical observatory open to the public at Viote del Monte Bondone, in the meadows behind the Capanna Viote, not far from the Giardino Botanico Alpino (Alpine Botanical Garden). It is run by MUSE – Museo delle Scienze di Trento. The facility occupies a former concrete military bunker, once used for shooting exercises, and was a peripheral site of the former Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali; it took its present form in 2010. MUSE has offered sky-observation experiences every year since 2001.
The main instrument is an 80-centimetre-diameter Newtonian reflector telescope, supported by cameras that show faint objects in high resolution. With special filters the Sun can be observed even during the day. The programme includes night and day observations, shows, excursions and activities for families and children; in summer, concerts, science theatre and readings are added.
Thanks to its sky, which is little affected by light pollution and protected by a regional law, the site has been included in the UNESCO register of sites connected to the sky. The terrace is open only during the activities scheduled on the MUSE website and, by reservation, for groups of at least 20 people.
