About the museum
The park includes the Collina del Serpente, inhabited as early as the Early Neolithic and a point of reference for the pre-Roman communities of Ausculum. Between the 6th and 4th centuries BC it was used as a necropolis. In the 5th century a large building for public and religious gatherings of the local communities was built there, rebuilt at the start of the 4th century together with the regular houses on the western slope and their tombs.
The hilltop was abandoned between the late 4th and the early 3rd century BC, but continued to house the burials of local aristocrats until the 2nd century BC. In the area outside the entrance, an imperial-age necropolis was discovered along the road that led to Lucania.
On 8 March 2002, during the demolition of old houses, an extensive Roman settlement came to light. A dromos of about ten metres leads to a chamber tomb containing the remains of a high-ranking woman of the 2nd century BC and her grave goods, while a mausoleum built in reticulate brickwork is attributed to a high-ranking family of the Augustan age.
