About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Ascoli Satriano was established by decree of Bishop Felice di Molfetta on 29 June 2003; on 24 July 2007 it became part of the Polo museale di Ascoli Satriano (local museum network). It occupies the upper floor of the former monastery of Santa Maria del Popolo. The church, dating from the 13th century, with two naves and a polygonal apse and largely restored in the mid-18th century, is now the museum’s auditorium. The monastery housed Augustinian hermits until their suppression in 1809, then the Redemptorists from 1818, the Sacramentine nuns and the Dominicans, who left it in 1961.

The picture gallery brings together 17th- and 18th-century canvases from Ascoli Satriano, Cerignola and Orta Nova, by unknown local artists and by masters of the Neapolitan school such as Paolo De Matteis and Paolo De Maio. Among the devotional sculptures, mainly figures of saints, stands out an enthroned Madonna and Child from Cerignola, dating from between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The silverware section includes monstrances, chalices and crosiers, a small instrumentum pacis (pax tablet) with the Madonna of the Purification, patron saint of Candela, and an ebony and mahogany cross inlaid with ivory and mother-of-pearl from Rocchetta Sant’Antonio. The route is completed by liturgical vestments in silk embroidered with gold.
