About the museum
The gallery is housed in the Palazzo dei Canonici, a 16th-century building erected by the chapter of the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore, next to the church. The museum, opened in 1994, presents works that come mainly from churches and oratories in the area.
The route, spread over eight rooms, highlights the artistic ties between Spello and the nearby cities of Orvieto, Spoleto, Foligno and Perugia. Alongside panel paintings and detached frescoes, medieval and Renaissance wooden sculptures and Gothic and Baroque goldsmiths’ work are displayed.
Among the best-known works are the diptych by Cola Petruccioli of 1391, the processional cross by Paolo Vanni of 1398, the panels attributed to the Master of the Assunta of Amelia, a Madonna and Child attributed to Andrea d’Assisi, known as l’Ingegno, and the festival decorations by Marcantonio Grecchi. The museum can be visited with a combined ticket together with the Villa dei Mosaici.
