About the museum
Palazzo Trinci, on the Piazza Grande in Foligno, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries as the residence of the Trinci family, who ruled the city from 1305 to 1439. After the city was annexed to the Papal States, it housed papal governors, then public offices and a barracks. Damaged by the earthquake of 1831–32 and by the bombing in the Second World War, it was closed and restored from 1985, reopened in 1997 and transformed into the Museo della Città in 2000.
Among the most celebrated rooms are the frescoed Sala delle Arti liberali e dei Pianeti (Hall of the Liberal Arts and Planets), recently attributed to Gentile da Fabriano, the loggia of Romolo e Remo (Romulus and Remus), the Sala dei Giganti (Hall of the Giants) and the chapel with the frescoes by Ottaviano Nelli (1424) depicting the Sposalizio di Sant’Anna. A Gothic staircase links the three exhibition levels.
The museum includes the Museo archeologico, with material from the Umbrian peoples of the Fulginates and the Plestini and Roman and late antique stone finds; the civic picture gallery (Pinacoteca civica), founded in 1863, with works from the 14th to the 16th century by artists such as Dono Doni, Bernardino di Mariotto, Pierantonio Mezzastris and Niccolò Alunno; the Museo dell’Istituzione comunale, on the history of the Comune from the 15th century to Italian unification; and the multimedia museum of jousts and tournaments (Museo multimediale delle giostre e dei tornei), opened in 2001.
