About the museum

The Archaeological Museum of Viddalba documents the settlement of the municipal territory and of the lower Coghinas valley from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. It is considered the only scientific cultural centre in this area. The route is accompanied by information panels designed also for non-specialist visitors.

The rooms display ceramic and stone material of the Ozieri culture, Eneolithic finds linked to the Bonnanaro culture, surface finds and material from the Nuragic village of San Leonardo, including a bronze axe of particular importance. For the Roman period, the grave goods of the San Leonardo necropolis, up to the 4th century AD, are on show, with jewellery in gold, silver and glass paste.

The most distinctive part of the collection consists of around eighty stone funerary stelae decorated with palm fronds, placed in the outdoor area beyond the ditch. They are known as “mirror” stelae and bear stylised human figures incised on their main face. The collection is completed by containers from the Imperial and Late Imperial periods, medieval fragments and coins from the Punic, Roman and Renaissance periods. Outdoors there are also millstones, large vessels and reconstructions of enchytrismós tombs.
