About the museum

The Museo archeologico e paleobotanico di Perfugas, known as MAP, was opened in 1988 and houses the archaeological and palaeobotanical evidence of the Anglona. The display follows a chronological order across eight sections and three thematic displays, from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, and its management is entrusted to the Sa Rundine cooperative.

The palaeobotanical section presents plant fossils from the petrified forests of the Anglona, formed about 18 million years ago through the intense volcanic activity of the area. This is followed by the Palaeolithic section with the oldest stone artefacts found in Sardinia, dating to about 450,000 years ago, and then the routes devoted to the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Eneolithic and Nuragic civilisation, with pottery, stone tools, daggers and bronze fibulae.

Among the best-known pieces are the statuette of the Mother Goddess with child, found at Sos Badulesos, and a head of a Nuragic warrior in white limestone. One display is dedicated to the sacred world of water, with the sacred well of Predio Canopoli, while the Classical and medieval sections document relations with the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans and the majolica of various churches in the area. The last room presents, in fourteen display cases, the results of research carried out since 1978 in the twelve towns of the Anglona.
