About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of Perfugas occupies a chapel and the sacristy of the parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and is part of the museum system of the Diocese of Tempio-Ampurias. It is devoted above all to the altarpiece of Saint George, displayed since 1995 in a chapel set up for this purpose.
The altarpiece, about 8.60 metres high and 6.40 metres wide, is a large wooden work in the Gothic-Aragonese style, painted in tempera with later oil repainting and made up of more than fifty panels. Its author is unknown and is conventionally called the Master of Perfugas. It originally formed the altar of the country church of San Giorgio, built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries a few kilometres from the village, where a photographic copy now stands.
The museum also holds silverware, a statue of the Madonna delle Recomendade and parchments containing deeds of consecration of churches. These include the one from 1120 for the church of Santa Vittoria, now in Erula, which mentions Nicolaus Galuleiu, the earliest known bishop of the ancient diocese of Ampurias, and one from 1320.
