About the museum
The collection grew out of the passion of Carlo Battista Castellini, born in Bornato, a hamlet of Cazzago San Martino. A carpenter by trade, he has loved nativity scenes since childhood. Travelling to many countries around the world, Castellini sought out the original nativity scene of each place and so built, in his own home, a gallery of nativity scenes from every continent.
The collection now has more than a thousand nativity scenes and represents over 130 countries. It is a permanent display that can also be visited during the year on telephone request. Each winter an annual exhibition open to the public is set up during the Christmas weeks, organised with the association Amici del Presepio Bornato.
The figures and settings show how the Nativity is told in different cultures, with materials, costumes and landscapes typical of each country.
