About the museum
The museum is in the centre of Palù del Fersina (Palai en Bersntol), near the town hall, and takes its name from the Pèrkmandl, an imaginary mining sprite. It is connected with the neighbouring Erdemolo (Gruab va Hardimbl) mine museum and tells the story of mining in the Fersina Valley from the late Middle Ages and its relationship with the Mòcheno community.
The route runs over two floors, beginning with a gallery whose walls are streaked with veins of copper that leads into the world of the mines and the lives of miners. On the first floor visitors discover the minerals sought by miners, the role of natural resources such as wood and water, and the tensions between residents and miners over the use of the land. The second floor is devoted to the communities that shaped the valley: its inhabitants descend not only from miners but also from German-speaking farming populations who arrived from Bavaria and Tyrol around 1200.
