About the museum
The shrine stands on the Leiten hill, which overlooks the town of Asiago, in memory of the fighting that between 1915 and 1918 made the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni one of the main theatres of the war. It was inaugurated on 17 July 1938 and is built of local white marble, with works by the sculptors Montini and Zanetti. The building has a square base and, above the crypt, a large terrace with a four-faced arch 47 metres high; on the parapet, arrows indicate the most important places of fighting.
In the crypt, with galleries along the perimeter and axial corridors converging on an octagonal votive chapel, rest more than 54,000 fallen soldiers of the First World War, Italian and Austro-Hungarian, some identified and placed in individual niches, others unknown and gathered in common graves, together with three fallen soldiers of the Second World War. Among the identified fallen are twelve recipients of the Gold Medal of Military Valour.
Near the entrance to the crypt, two rooms house a small historical museum: the left-hand section illustrates events in the mountain sector from the Adige to the Brenta in 1915–1916, the right-hand section the period 1917–1918, with reference to the fighting on the Pasubio, the logistical organisation and the Battle of the Ortigara. War relics, documents and photographs accompany the account.
