About the museum
The idea for the museum arose in 1972 among a group of friends from Canove di Roana, who noticed that the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, one of the main theatres of the First World War, had no museum dedicated to the war and that many recovered finds were ending up elsewhere. They began to collect material, initially stored in a cellar.
In 1974 the Municipality of Roana adopted the project under the name “Museo Storico della Grande Guerra 1915-1918” and chose as its site the former railway station of Canove, bought from the Società Veneta Ferrovie. An organising committee, chaired by the mayor, became coordinator and curator of the museum.
Today the museum holds around 8,500 finds: artillery shells of various calibres, including an Austrian 420 mm shell, weapons, uniforms, tools used by soldiers in the trenches, personal effects of soldiers collected on the battlefields, over 2,000 photographs, reproductions of Achille Beltrame's plates and original documents.
