About the museum
On Monte Zebio, on the Asiago Plateau, some of the fiercest battles of the First World War were fought in 1916–1917. During the Battle of the Ortigara (10–25 June 1917), Italian attacks on the Austrian positions were repeatedly repulsed. On 8 June 1917 an Italian mine dug beneath the Lunetta rock exploded accidentally, also setting off the Austrian mines and causing the deaths of about 120 soldiers and 40 officers of the Catania Brigade, who were observing the enemy lines.
Since 1997 the Municipality of Asiago has restored the Austrian positions as part of the “Sentiero della Pace” (Peace Trail) project: the Crocetta, the trenches in front of Malga Zebio and the so-called Mina dello Scalambron. The work has brought to light an ancient defensive system, with mine craters, strongpoints, memorials and service areas, and included the installation of information panels.
Near the Rifugio Stalder a section of Italian trench has been rebuilt according to the original designs of the military engineers. Nearby, visitors can see the restored Italian cemetery, where the fallen of the Sassari Brigade rest, and the ruins of the Italian command post. A path links all the positions.
