About the museum
The civic museum of San Vito al Tagliamento is housed on the upper floors of the Torre Raimonda, one of the medieval towers of the historic centre, linked to the figure of Raimondo della Torre, Patriarch of Aquileia. The nucleus of the archaeological collections was created in the late 1950s on the initiative of Professor Federico De Rocco, after whom the museum is named.
The museum was officially inaugurated in 1993. Over time the collection grew with materials from excavations in the area, in particular the grave goods of the early Iron Age necropolis of San Valentino.
The route is divided into an archaeology section, from prehistory to the Renaissance, and a section of figurative arts. Among the prehistoric and protohistoric materials, those from the San Valentino necropolis stand out; they are followed by finds from the Roman period and decorated 16th-century ceramics. The art section holds fragments of 14th-century frescoes from Palazzo Altan and from churches in the area. The best-known object is a small head of a Gorgon, which has become the symbol of the museum.
