About the museum
The Museo civico delle carrozze d'epoca opened in 2006 in San Martino di Codroipo, a short distance from Villa Manin di Passariano. It is housed in the nineteenth-century barchessa (farm wing) of Villa Kechler, a former silk mill bought and restored by the Comune di Codroipo, and extends over three superimposed galleries and the three floors of a central tower, where the fireplaces once used for rearing silkworms are preserved.
The core of the collection is the holding of the collector Antonio Lauda (Foggia 1925 – Codroipo 2000): 44 carriages of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries made by well-known European coachbuilders, with travel accessories, harness, life-size horses and military saddlery. Among the pieces are a vehicle used for driving-school licence tests, several models for carrying children, and nine horses in plaster and papier-mâché of various origins.
The central tower displays the collection of historic and ethnographic toys of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries donated by Gabriella Cardazzo, with porcelain dolls, Sicilian puppets (pupi siciliani), hand puppets, tin toys and folk costumes. The museum also includes the “Elio Bartolini” art collection of the city of Codroipo and a section devoted to the kitchen of the twentieth century; a donation of sacred vestments from the Kechler-Ferrari family is awaiting display.
