About the museum
The Museo civico archeologico di Codroipo opened in 2003 to present to the public the results of excavation campaigns carried out in recent decades in the Medio Friuli by local scholars and enthusiasts. The display is organised in five sections documenting human activity in the Codroipo area and neighbouring municipalities, from protohistory to the Renaissance.
The collections are housed in the former district prison (carcere mandamentale), a building erected shortly after 1840 and in use until 1966. The austere, imposing structure has been restored while keeping its original layout and character: the exercise yard, now covered by a light roof, has become the main exhibition hall, while the finds are kept in cells spread over three floors, closed by heavy doors.
The route follows scientific and educational principles that make it easy to follow and suitable for pupils of all school levels; educational services can be arranged with teachers for schools. The museum is in the centre of Codroipo, next to the cathedral (duomo), a short walk from the railway station and the regular bus stop.
