About the museum
The Bārta Museum came about thanks to the idea of Jēkabs Rūsiņš (1917–1994), a native of Bārta, local historian, journalist and poet, and opened its doors in 1985. The museum has a permanent exhibition, “Bārtas tautas tērpa darināšanas un valkāšanas tradīcijas 19.–21. gadsimtā” (Traditions of Making and Wearing the Bārta National Costume, 19th–21st Centuries). Only here can you learn the stories behind the elements of the Bārta national costume, put on the Bārta national costume and try weaving on a loom.
Together with the Bārta ethnographic ensemble, an educational programme, “Dzied Bārtas sievas” (The Women of Bārta Sing), has been created. In it visitors can get to know the diversity of the national costume, listen to Bārta songs and learn one of the Bārta songs. Each year the museum offers two to three exhibitions. The collection includes materials about prominent people from Bārta.
