About the museum
The museum was founded in 1979 by the doctor Vaclovas Intas, who from 1957 had collected stones in the surrounding fields and carried them to his homestead. The museum park was begun in 1972 on both banks of the Bartuva river, in a picturesque valley of 14.5 ha. A collection of about 150 thousand stones from the Baltic Sea region has been assembled here; the boulders are arranged according to where they came from during the Ice Age – from Finland, the Åland Islands, the Gulf of Bothnia, Sweden and elsewhere.
The indoor exhibition is set up in a water mill built in 1792 and restored in 1978. The small exhibition is arranged in three halls: magmatic and metamorphic rocks, useful minerals and palaeontological fossils, and minerals. The museum has no strict boundaries – it has become an inseparable part of the town of Mosėdis.
