About the museum
The Skuodo muziejus opened to its first visitors in August 1992, marking the 420th anniversary of the municipal self-government of the town of Skuodas. It was founded by local enthusiasts together with the then leadership of the municipality and its culture department. The first director was Evaldas Razgus; since 2002 the museum has been headed by Aldona Ozolienė.
The museum is housed in the building of the Skuodas manor site. In 1918 the first Skuodas gymnasium operated here, and later various cultural institutions; the last of them was a music school. The museum being set up had not a single exhibit, so the first items were donated by private persons, some were handed over by the Bartuva secondary school, and others were bought or collected during expeditions.
Today the holdings contain more than 20,000 exhibits, mostly ethnographic, historical and folk art. The rich archaeology collection comprises finds from Apuolė, Klaišiai, Klauseikiai and other hillforts, burial mounds and cemeteries. The holdings also include items donated by Lithuanian emigrants – photographs, medals, wood carvings and batik works.
Four exhibition halls host permanent exhibitions on the formation of the town, the old rural crafts, folk art and the history of sport. The museum cooperates with the Skuodas branch of the Lietuvos kraštotyros draugija (Lithuanian Regional Studies Society) and helps the district's folk artists to organise exhibitions and projects.
