About the museum
The Tukuma Mākslas muzejs (Tukums Art Museum) is a unit of the Tukums Museum, located in the historic centre of the town at 7 Harmonijas iela. The building was constructed in 1880; from the late 19th century until 1997 a bank operated in it, and the museum has been here since 1997.
The art collection was begun in the early 1930s by the painter Leonīds Āriņš (1907–1991), who is also regarded as the founder of the Tukums Museum. The collection includes works by Jānis Rozentāls, Johans Valters, Vilhelms Purvītis, Jēkabs Kazaks, Ģederts Eliass, Valdemārs Tone, Konrāds Ubāns and other Latvian artists, as well as works by Tukums artists Leonīds Āriņš, Ansis Artums and Kārlis Neilis. The collection holds more than 500 paintings and 200 graphic works, which can be viewed in person on special request.
The museum organises exhibitions of professional Latvian artists, offers the creative programme “Kopējam gleznas” (Let's Copy Paintings) and lets visitors explore the collection in the digital exhibition “Tukuma muzejs cauri laikiem” (The Tukums Museum Through the Ages), where more than 250 paintings by 110 artists can be seen.
