About the museum
The Tukuma Pils tornis (Tower of the Tukums Castle) stands in the oldest masonry building in the town, which is part of the Livonian Order castle that was destroyed and rebuilt many times. At different times the tower served as a prison and a warehouse, but since 1995 a museum has operated in it, telling the story of Tukums and its people.
The main exhibition “Savējo stāsti, ne svešo” (Stories of Our Own, Not of Strangers) is devoted to events in Tukums in the 20th century and to people's fates in the context of Latvian, Baltic and European history. The interactive exhibition “Vēstules nākamībai” (Letters to the Future) shows letters written on birch bark in Siberia, which are included in the Latvian national register of the UNESCO “Memory of the World” programme.
The castle tower is a branch of the Tukums Museum and since 2023 has been a member of the Baltic Sea Region Castles and Museums Association. The exhibitions and educational programmes relate to the history of the town and to contemporary processes, and various groups of residents are often involved in their creation.
