About the museum
The Pastariņa muzejs (Pastariņš Museum) is dedicated to the writer Ernests Birznieks-Upītis (1871–1960), who was called Pastariņš as a child. The farmstead “Bisnieki”, where the writer was born, is more than 400 years old and has changed beyond recognition over time. The historic buildings have been restored to the situation in the mid-20th century, when the writer's brother Kārlis Birznieks (1864–1942) ran the farm.
In the restored residential house visitors can learn about the Birznieks family, their everyday life, and the life and work of the writer. The museum displays original objects that belonged to the writer, including a writing desk with a chair and an inkwell. Exhibitions have been set up in the granary (1894), the shallow cowshed (1896), the bathhouse-barn pirts-dārs (around 1910), the deep cowshed and the wagon shed vāgūzis (1830), whose motifs are interwoven with the writer's stories.
In the garden a reduced model of the old yard shows the situation of the writer's childhood, and the little houses are so big that knēveļi (small mythical beings) could live in them. The programmes use games and play to introduce the stories, traditional crafts and culinary heritage, including baking bread in a real bread oven.
