About the museum
The Jūrmala Museum was founded in 1962 as the Jūrmala Local History Museum and has changed its name, structure and location several times. Since 1997 it has been housed in the former chemical cleaner's and laundry building in Majori, Tirgoņu iela 29, which was reconstructed for museum purposes in 1997 and 2004.
Permanent exhibitions are open to visitors. The history exhibition “Rīgas Jūrmalas un Ķemeru kūrorta vēsture 18.–20. gadsimtā” (History of the Rīgas Jūrmala and Ķemeri Resort, 18th–20th Centuries) is a journey back in time to the bathing places of Rīgas Jūrmala and the Ķemeri resort, with particular attention to the beach and the history of bathing. The audiovisual space “Atpūtnieks ceļā uz Jūrmalu” (A Holidaymaker on the Way to Jūrmala), opened in 2026, allows visitors to travel to the resort as holidaymakers did in different eras.
The museum's exhibition halls and the Kamīnzāle (Fireplace Hall) regularly host new art and cultural history exhibitions. The collection contains more than 70,000 objects that tell of life in the resort from the late 19th century to the present day. The museum has three branches – Aspazijas māja, Jūrmalas Brīvdabas muzejs and Bulduru Izstāžu nams.
