About the museum
Rainis and Aspazija bought the summer house in Majori in 1926 and spent their summers there from 1927 to 1929. On 12 September 1929 Rainis died in this house. The decision to set up a museum was taken in 1945, and the museum was opened to visitors in 1949.
Initially the museum operated under the Latvian Academy of Sciences, but in 1963 it became a branch of the Raiņa Literatūras un mākslas vēstures muzejs (Rainis Museum of Literature and Art History). In 1965–1969 a reconstruction was carried out, during which the poets' summer house (two buildings at J. Pliekšāna iela 7) was joined by the neighbouring house (J. Pliekšāna iela 5), creating a joint museum complex.
The exhibition “Es un Tu” (Me and You), created by the museum's specialists together with a design office, is dedicated to the love and creative peaks of Rainis and Aspazija: it begins with the poets' first meeting and ends with Rainis's death. The restored living rooms of both poets in the summer house and on the upper floor of the garden house can also be seen. The museum is a branch of the Memoriālo muzeju apvienība (Association of Memorial Museums).
