About the museum
The Jūrmalas Brīvdabas muzejs (Jūrmala Open-Air Museum) was established in 1970, and in 1979 it opened to visitors as the public museum of the fishermen’s collective farm “Uzvara” (Victory). Since 1 January 2003 it has operated as a department of the Jūrmalas muzejs (Jūrmala Museum). The museum covers 0.86 ha of pine forest by the Ragakāpa nature trail, not far from where the Lielupe flows into the sea.
The grounds contain residential and farm buildings typical of fishermen’s farmsteads of the second half of the 19th and the early 20th century – living houses, a granary, a net hut, a fish smokehouse, a sauna and others. The buildings were brought from various fishing villages in Kurzeme and Jūrmala. The museum is especially proud of its wide collection of anchors and fishing boats.
During the active season traditional events take place – Easter, Museum Night, Līgo festival traditions and the Autumn Harvest Festival. On Thursdays in July and August visitors can take part in rope-twisting and net-mending master classes and watch model demonstrations of fish smoking.
