About the museum
The museum opened in March 2023 in Medumi, Augšdaugava municipality. It is run by the municipal institution “TAKA”, and the main initiator of its creation was the local history teacher and guide Miropija Petkune. The museum is part of a 100 km long cross-border tourist route between Latvia and Lithuania along the former “Life and Death” front.
The exhibition is devoted to the fierce battles of 1915 on the Ilūkste and Medumi uplands, where neither the German nor the Russian army broke through, and both built three lines of trenches. The first part tells about the pre-war history of Medumi, based on the testimony of local residents; the second about the events of the First World War in Europe and Latvia, and the life and weapons of soldiers; and in the third room one can feel life in a bunker, looking at a model of Russian trenches and shelters, elements of the battlefield, soldier figures, and sound and video effects. German concrete bunkers can be seen along the First World War bunker route.
