About the museum
The Mažeikių muziejus (Mažeikiai Museum) was founded in 1928, when the teacher and local historian Stasys Ličkūnas set up the first exhibition in a room of his house. Later the museum moved to rented premises and in 1934 to the attic of the Juozo Tumo-Vaižganto pradžios mokykla (Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas Primary School). During the Second World War about 80% of the treasures were lost; after the war the exhibitions were restored. From 1967 to 2014 the museum was led by the archaeologist Adelė Pušinskaitė-Cholodinskienė.
The museum holds collections of archaeology, ethnography, professional art and folk art of the Samogitian region. Since 2011 a modern interactive archaeological exhibition, “Mažeikių kraštas: tarp kuršių, žiemgalių ir žemaičių” (The Mažeikiai Region: Between Curonians, Semigallians and Samogitians), created together with the museum by creators from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, has been on show; it is also adapted for visitors with visual impairments. In 2024 the permanent exhibition “Naftos kelias” (The Oil Road) opened, about the extraction and processing of oil and the history of the Mažeikiai oil refinery.
Branches of the museum are the Viekšnių vaistinės muziejus (Viekšniai Pharmacy Museum), the Aleksandro Griškevičiaus memorialinis muziejus (Aleksandras Griškevičius Memorial Museum) and the Satrijos Raganos memorialinis muziejus (Satrija Ragana Memorial Museum).
