About the museum

The museum is housed in a house on Liškiavos Street in Alytus. The poet’s father, Ignas Jonynas, built it in 1927. Antanas Jonynas lived here until he went blind, and in 1941 he left to study at the Kaunas Institute for the Blind.

In 1988 the Lithuanian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted, together with the Lithuanian Writers’ Union, set up the museum in the poet’s birth home. From 1 January 1990 it became a branch of the Maironio lietuvių literatūros muziejus (Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum), and the official opening took place on 25 May 1990. It was the first literary museum in Alytus. From 1 January 1991 the museum was taken over by the Alytaus kraštotyros muziejus (Alytus Regional Museum).

The museum hosts poetry events, such as “Poetry Spring” and “I Sing Poetry”. The poet’s verses have been printed since 1942; his first book, “Kovotojų dainos” (Songs of Fighters), was published in 1949.
